Hildesheim remains in the leading group
Invaders celebrate 45:13 blowout victory in Regensburg
The Hildesheim Invaders also won their second game of the season in the effect® ENERGY German Football League by a wide margin. In the 45:13 away win against the Regensburg Phoenix, the game was practically decided by halftime: Hildesheim led 31:0 after two dominant quarters.
In front of around 350 spectators at the Weinweg stadium, Head Coach Marcus Herford's team set the tone early – and hardly allowed Regensburg to get into the game for long stretches.
Hildesheim asserts control early
The Invaders started off controlled and immediately challenged Regensburg's defense with patient drives. Kicker Paul Krause scored the first points with a 17-yard field goal to take the lead. Shortly after, quarterback Nelson Hughes increased the score to 10:0 with a 1-yard run (extra point Krause).
Even though the offense did not execute every series perfectly, it remained consistent: Hildesheim moved the ball, gained field position – and kept the Phoenix offense on the sidelines for a long time. The key was that the visitors avoided mistakes and hardly allowed Regensburg any favorable starts.
In the second quarter, the game tipped decisively. After an important pass to Pieter Solf from close field position, Hughes made the next statement: a 52-yard touchdown pass to Paul Terjung. Later, Matti Probst capped a drive with a 5-yard run to make it 31:0 at halftime.
The numbers underline how one-sided the first half was: at halftime, Hildesheim had gained 386 yards compared to just 73 yards for Regensburg. That is not just a difference on paper – it explains why Regensburg hardly found themselves in situations in the first half where a comeback seemed realistic.
Defense and big plays decide the game
The foundation for the away win was laid above all by the Invaders' defense. Regensburg found no rhythm in the running game nor consistent solutions in the passing game against the pressure. A key moment after the break: Kyle Kitchens stopped a Phoenix drive with a sack deep in their own half – the drive ended with a turnover on downs. In such game situations, dominance becomes measurable: when a team allows no points in the opponent's field position, the pressure on the offense increases – and the game plan becomes one-dimensional.
Hildesheim consistently took advantage of this control. Hughes found Philipp Dolezal in the end zone, Krause converted the extra point to make it 38:0.
Regensburg then made an offensive statement: Nebechi Abana shortened the score with a 63-yard touchdown run. But the Invaders responded immediately – also because the game was increasingly characterized by short fields and turnovers. After a Hildesheim fumble near their own end zone, Regensburg also fumbled on the next play; Montrell Harris-Jackson reacted the fastest, secured the loose ball, and carried it into the end zone for a touchdown.
Regensburg set the final point in the last quarter: quarterback Cameron Yowell threw a touchdown pass to Jadon Gildersleeve for the 45:13 final score. The quarter results (10:0, 21:0, 14:6, 0:7) especially reflect Hildesheim's dominant first half.
Strong start despite personnel absences
The victory is also remarkable in view of the personnel situation: Johan Sager, Daniel Kane, and Thies Surma did not make the trip to Bavaria. Nevertheless, Hildesheim remained stable in both units – an indication that the Invaders currently not only have quality at the top, but also functioning processes in depth.
Head Coach Marcus Herford assessed the success soberly after the game: "Regensburg played with a lot of effort until the end. Especially away in the GFL, you first have to control such games."
With the 45:13 in Regensburg, the Invaders confirm their strong start to the season and remain in the leading group. Next weekend, the Homecoming Gameday continues: Hildesheim will then host the Düsseldorf Panther, kickoff is at 4 p.m.
