Hildesheim Invaders ahead of the GFL start

Invaders start the GFL 2026 season with new momentum

The Hildesheim Invaders are entering the 2026 effect Energy GFL season with a well-rehearsed core, several returnees, and a home game schedule set early. The opener is scheduled for May 9: Hildesheim will host the opening game against the Allgäu Comets.

Before the first kickoff, the situation appears clearly defined: a roster focused on continuity and selectively strengthened, plus preparation with several joint sessions – along with a home game plan featuring six dates at two venues. Whether this package will hold up in the highly competitive GFL will become apparent under competitive conditions starting in May.

Preparation and structure: early intensity, clear processes

In the months leading up to the season, Head Coach Marcus Herford relied on training blocks with external comparison opportunities. Preparation included joint sessions with the Hannover Grizzlys and the Calgary Gators as well as the internal “Blue vs. White Game,” which served as a benchmark under competitive conditions.

For organizational support, the club points to several regional partners: VfV 06 Hildesheim provided infrastructure, JIM Fitnessclub supported the athletic area, and SV Dinklar was also involved as a partner in the season preparation. Herford assesses the importance of this environment as follows: “We are very grateful for the support from the region. Football is a team sport – and that applies not only on the field. Many partners have contributed to our ability to prepare professionally.”

Roster: Returnees and continuity as guiding principles

Personnel-wise, the Invaders rely on familiarity – with returnees from their own ranks and a core that stays together. Philipp Dolezal and Johan Sager return as homegrown players. The core axis around Christian Klötergens, Matti Probst, Georg Kraft, and Paul Terjung also remains intact.

The approach is clear: less of a complete overhaul, more stability – with the goal that automatisms and coordination will take hold faster at the start of the season than in a team that still has to find itself.

More depth for defense and offense – and a clear plan

On offense, running back Jeremie Beni returns; together with rookie Tristan Gintaut, he is expected to invigorate the running game. At the key position in the passing game, quarterback Nelson Hughes is planned, who, behind a strengthened offensive line with Dave Beale and Daniel Kane, should have more time for reads and decision-making. Offensively, Herford relies on variability and tempo – an approach that, however, only works consistently in the GFL if protection, playcalling, and ball security all fit together.

Defensively, the reinforcement of the line stands out: With Kyle Kitchens, a new addition joins, who is particularly highlighted in the roster. Together with Julian Thompson, Holden Hughes, Dorian Zuidema, and Willem Vancompernolle, the unit is expected to gain depth – a factor that, in a long season, not only allows for more rotation options but also provides stability against physical running attacks and in the pass rush.

The coaching staff includes Jared Hilbers, Dennis Kruschat, Rune Barusche, and David McCants. The defense is managed by Javan Lenhardt, supported by Jacob Adelman and Lucas Höne.

Herford remains deliberately controlled in his objectives before the start: “We have respect for every opponent in this league. The GFL is extremely strong. At the same time, we have invested a lot in recent months and can see how our team has developed. Now we want to show what we are capable of.”
