Axel Petermann opens the view into the psyche of evil
Not every murder can be explained. But every one leaves traces. On October 2, 2026, experienced profiler and bestselling author Axel Petermann takes the audience in the Hildesheim City Library into the world of operational case analysis. His lecture combines real murder cases, investigative methods, and the question of what makes people into perpetrators.
When traces tell stories
Axel Petermann views crimes not only from the perspective of investigators. He tries to see through the eyes of the perpetrators: How are victims selected? What decisions lead to the crime? And what clues reveal something about motives and personality? His vivid approach makes complex criminological connections understandable and tangible.
Criminal psychology from first-hand
Petermann worked for decades at the Bremen Criminal Police, led a murder commission, and dealt with more than 1,000 cases of unnatural death. From the year 2000, he built up the department for Operational Case Analysis and helped establish profiling methods in Germany. Additionally, he teaches criminology, advises television productions, and is known as the author of several bestsellers.
An evening between reading, analysis, and conversation
The event offers an intensive mix of lecture and reading. The focus is on Petermann's book The Psyche of Evil, which deals with the motives of murderers and the work of a profiler. After the lecture, there will be time for questions and a signing session. A book table from the Thalia bookstore invites attendees to acquire the presented work directly on-site.
Event atmosphere in the City Library
The learning garden of the City Library creates the right framework for this concentrated literature and true crime evening. The audience's mood thrives on suspense, focused listening, and a shared view of real investigative work. The event is aimed at crime fans, readers of non-fiction books, and anyone interested in perpetrator psychology, case analysis, and modern investigative work.

Visitors can expect a well-founded, exciting evening with one of the most well-known German profilers. Those who want to understand how investigators read crime scenes, categorize motives, and develop perpetrator profiles will experience an extraordinary event in Hildesheim.
